If you have completed the home study written course and are enrolled in the behind the wheel training you can apply for your learner's permit if you are over 15 1/2 years old.
If you are over 17 and 1/2 years old you can apply for the learner's permit but you need to have completed both driver's education and training before you get your license unless you are over 18 years old.
4. When can I start driving with my parents?
Once a student receives their permit, they need to have one lesson with a driving school in order to make the permit valid. After the first lesson with the driving school, the student may begin driving with the parents, as long as they are California licensed drivers.
5. Can I start taking driving lessons without a permit?
You can if you are over 15 1/2 years old but only with a driving school that can issue you a temporary student license.
