The state now requires those applying for a driver’s license or identification card for the first time to provide the DMV with two documents that prove they are California residents. The law does not apply to applicants who are renewing, applying for a duplicate or a correction to their current driver’s license or ID card.
In the case of a teenager going for a learner’s permit, examples of acceptable documents would be a birth certificate, passport and/or school documents.
Other acceptable documents to prove residency are:
• Rental or lease agreement with the signature of the owner/landlord and the tenant/resident.
• Deed or title to residential property.
• Mortgage bill.
• Home utility bills, including cellphone bill.
• Medical documents.
